1920) The action is set in the opulent world of the jeunesse dorée, bored and constantly looking for excitement. The Roman setting is clearly announced in the opening sequence, which shows the Colosseum, the Arch of Constantine, and the steps of the Church of San Gregorio al Celio, on which sits the sad and exhausted protagonist, Reginetta, a poor girl who has lost everything in the Messina earthquake and now possesses only a canary in a cage. It is the last day of Carnival, and the young Prince Massimo di Luni and his aristocratic friends come upon Reginetta fast asleep on the steps of the church, and, taking advantage of her state, kidnap her for a cruel jest: to turn her into a princess for a day. Thus is realised the first "dream with open eyes", the first inversion of reality, which makes the poor girl a great lady who awakens in a magnificent mansion, surrounded by luxury, servants, and suitors. Callously returned to real life, Reginetta finds work as a laundress, but is quickly noticed by a music teacher, who turns her into an admired singer who wins riches, fame, and success. Moving in fashionable society, the young woman meets Prince Massimo di Luni and his friends; there follows an intertwining of their fortunes and relationships, loves and spites, culminating in another "dream with open eyes", whose victim is the Prince di Luni himself, who, after having been seduced, enjoys for a day the pleasure of having Reginetta for a wife. The happy ending, with the skirmishes overcome, unites the two protagonists. — MAP

1920) La vicenda si svolge nel ricco mondo della jeunesse dorée annoiata e continuamente in cerca di emozioni. L'ambientazione romana è chiaramente dichiarata nelle inquadrature iniziali, che mostrano il Colosseo, l’Arco di Costantino e la scalinata della chiesa di San Gregorio al Celio, sulla quale siede sconsolata e sfinita la protagonista, Reginetta, una povera ragazza, che ha perso tutto nel terremoto di Messina e ha con sé soltanto un canarino in gabbia. È il penultimo giorno di Carnevale e il giovane principe Massimo di Luni e i suoi aristocratici amici si imbattono in Reginetta profondamente addormentata sui gradini della chiesa e, approfittando del suo stato, la rapiscono per un crudele scherzo: renderla principessa per un giorno. Si realizza così il primo "sogno ad occhi aperti", la prima inversione della realtà, che fa della povera ragazza una gran dama che si risveglia in una sfarzosa residenza, circondata da lusso, servitù e corteggiatori. Restituita senza scrupoli alla vita reale, Reginetta trova lavoro come stiratrice, ma viene presto notata da un maestro di musica che fa di lei una cantante molto apprezzata, che conquista ricchezza, fama e successo. Frequentando il gran mondo la giovane incontra il principe Massimo di Luni e i suoi amici: nasce un intreccio di vicende e relazioni, innamoramenti e ripicche, che culmina nel secondo "sogno ad occhi aperti", di cui è vittima lo stesso principe di Luni, il quale, dopo essere stato irretito, assapora per un giorno il piacere di avere Reginetta come moglie. Il lieto fine, superate le schermaglie, unisce i due protagonisti. — MAP
